Hi Sabrina,

I have not yet run into this issue, but really appreciate you sharing your experience with us. I think in this case, yes, scrubbing with soap and water first to rid the box of urine would be a great idea. Then perhaps after rinsing the soap out it would be a good time to disinfect with a spray. Thanks again for sharing your experience so we can all be aware!

Hi! I have been using a water & vinegar solution to clean for some time now, (50/50 mix) however without lemon. I don't know if the lemon, and acid, would make a difference, but... I just went to clean my litter box and made some chlorine gas instead!

I gave it a good spritz and let it sit a couple of minutes, only to notice that it was "smoking" when I came back to scrub. I know you create chlorine gas when mixing ammonia and bleach, and after some googling, it appears that the ammonia (alkaline) in cat urine and vinegar (acid) can do the same thing.

Would the solution be to scrub with soap & water, then use the spray to disinfect? My cats are too old to toilet train...

Just thought I'd mention it so others can learn from my mistake and not be seriously injured.
