Natural Polish for Stainless Steel

Natural Polish for Stainless Steel

by Michelle on January 19, 2009

After using my chemical-ridden storebought stainless steel polish over the weekend and noticing it left streaks on my trash can as well as a strong smell in the air, I hopped online in the hopes of finding a better-working, safe, and natural solution.

I was in luck- one of my new favorite websites, thriftyfun.com, had a question/answer post suggesting the use of extra virgin olive oil with a clean, lint-free cloth. Impatient as I am, I grabbed an old holey sock (clean, of course) and my bottle of organic extra virgin olive oil. I accidentally poured more olive oil than I intended to on the trash can, but it spread easily and seemed to help with the polishing. A few wipes later, my trash can was streak-free and shinier than it had ever been with my commercial cleaner!

The olive oil left no lingering smell and since it is a safe and natural product, I can feel comfortable using it as often as necessary. My storebought cleaner actually has a warning to only use in a ventilated area and I had never enjoyed breathing in the smell. I don’t have to worry about this with the olive oil, plus I always have some stocked in my kitchen cupboard. I do not have any stainless steel appliances, but believe that this method would also work for those. Hopefully you enjoy and have success with this natural method, too!

Wow, that looks great! I am definitely going to try this on my fridge. I had been putting off polishing it because I didn’t want to use those chemicals! Thanks for this great, safe, and cheap solution. I love how olive oil is useful for so many things, and is completely safe and natural. Awesome!
